Dr.
Stanley P. Caine, an experienced college educator who is recognized for many
outstanding accomplishments, came to Wesleyan as Interim President in July 2008.
Dr. Caine served as President of Adrian College in Michigan from 1987 through
2005 and was honored with President Emeritus status upon his retirement. Prior
to his 18 years at Adrian, Dr. Caine served as Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Professor of History at Hanover College for 12 years. More recently,
he was Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean of
Wilmington College in Ohio.
His extensive professional experience also includes service as Assistant
Professor of History and Chairman of the Department of History at Lindenwood
College; Assistant Professor of History at DePauw University; and Vice President
for Academic Affairs and Professor of History at Hanover College.
Dr. Caine earned his bachelor’s degree at Macalester College, majoring in
history with minors in philosophy and political science. He earned his M.A. and
Ph.D. in history at the University of Wisconsin.
He is the author of The Myth of a Progressive Reform (1968), which received the
D.C. Everest Prize in Wisconsin Economic History, and is co-author of Political
Reform in Wisconsin (1973). He has authored numerous articles and book reviews,
and has received many awards and honors for his accomplishments. In the year he
retired from Adrian College, the newly completed student center there was named
for him.
Dr. Caine has been extensively involved in professional organizations and
activities and also in his community. His participation has included service on
the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and
Universities, the National Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities of
the United Methodist Church, of which he was President in 2002-2003, and
numerous other boards. He also has served on the President’s Council of the
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The chairman of Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees, Dr. William Pittman, says of Dr.
Caine: “Dr. Caine and his wife, Karen, are very excited about the opportunities
and challenges presented by this appointment. They consider themselves a team,
and both are enthusiastic. Mrs. Caine volunteered her time to coach the tennis
team at Adrian. Both she and Dr. Caine are very energetic, intellectually
curious, and dedicated to the advancement and well-being of young people. I am
confident that Dr. Caine will serve the College well in this interim period and
that he will provide outstanding leadership as we go forward in carrying out our
special mission.” |
