 Wesleyan Honors Alumni at Alumni Awards Event

ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA— North Carolina Wesleyan College recently honored several alumni at the college’s Alumni Awards Reception on Friday, September 29.

Jeffrey Shelton ’69 and Tom ’70 and Julia ’71 Fredericks received Wesleyan’s Distinguished Alumni Award for their outstanding contributions to their community and their generosity and exceptional support of the advancement and continued excellence of Wesleyan. Shelton is a long time member of the NC Wesleyan College Alumni Association, serves as a member of the Association’s Board of Directors, and chairs the Committee on Internships and Mentoring. The Fredericks family have been faithful donors and supporters of the College. Mr. Fredericks previously served as the President of the Alumni Board, both Fredericks are members of the Alumni Association, and they had an influential role in the creation of the Nu Gamma Phi scholarship fund for Wesleyan students.

Wesleyan presented its Alumni Family Award to the Martin – Jim & Sheila, Pittman – Jim ’92 & Janie Mac, and Robillard families– Andrew & Jan ‘04. The Alumni Family Award recognizes several members of the same family for their outstanding loyalty, generosity and service to the College over many years. As siblings, Jan Robillard and Jim Pittman, have both donated their time as Co-Chairs of the Day for Wesleyan Campaign and are members of the Alumni Association. Their mother, Sheila Martin has been a longtime supporter, donor and staff member of the College. She is a member of the Wesleyan Society with her husband, Jim Martin. As a family they have been faithful members of the Bishop family dedicating their time and recourses to the College.

Quinderra Spellman ’09 and Josh Cain ‘08 were bestowed the Alumni Achievement Award, which goes to recent alums who have already made significant achievements in society. Spellman is a member of the football coaching staff at Wesleyan and he also serves as the Director of the Shelton Leadership Challenge. He is a leader on campus, helping to mentor and train the leaders of tomorrow by teaching values-based leadership principles and traits of honesty, integrity, compassion, social responsibility and diversity. He has been an active alumni both in giving and support of his alma mater. Cain is the Mid-Atlantic Division Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Manager for the American Red Cross. He and his teams provide programs and staff to fulfill the program’s mission of providing humanitarian support to service members, veterans, and their families. Cain currently serves as Vice President of the NC Wesleyan College Alumni Association Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board’s Alumni Relations Committee. He is a regular and generous donor to the College.

“Each year we honor excellence by bestowing awards to alumni with outstanding achievement,” stated Rebekah Cain, Director of Alumni Relations. “All of these alumni personify Wesleyan’s tradition as an institution of excellence. We are thrilled to have such wonderful participation from our alumni this year.” All of the award recipients were nominated by their fellow alumni.
