Alumni Spotlight: Wallace Johnson ('82)

Congratulations to our very own Wallace Johnson on being named the Franklin City Public School Teacher of the Year for the 2018-19 school year! Wallace graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan in 1982 with his degree in history. He went on to earn Master’s degrees in education from Cambridge College in 2008 and the University of New England in 2010. Wallace pursued his passions and dedicated his career to being a history teacher and coach. He has been honored for his leadership and dedication to his students several times over the years, earning several accolades.

Wallace was the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2015 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee. The Bishop family is thankful for Wallace's dedication to the Bishop family over the years. He has been a faithful donor and regularly refers future Battling Bishops to join the Wesleyan family. He was an active runner, a wonderful student-athlete, a member of Pi Kappa Omega, SGA and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

When asked about his alma mater, Wallace said "Wesleyan was a great place to learn and explore my talents. Playing basketball with my buddy Dewey Clark at 12am and discussing History at the same time would be one of the favorite memories."

Wallace is a cross-country legend at NCWC. According to the NCWC Athletic Department, "Johnson was a self-trained runner who participated as an individual in a sport not sponsored by NCWC during his tenure. The Ahoskie, N.C. native relied on various coaches in the Department of Athletics for transportation to and from meets, and along the way, became a four-time Dixie All-Conference selection (three in cross country, one in track) and the lone individual league champion in Wesleyan history.

As a sophomore, Johnson earned his second All-Conference honor after shaving two minutes off of his career-best time and posting a 7th-place finish in the DIAC. He followed up with a junior season that saw him crowned the conference’s overall champion after turning in a time of 27:28 in the 5.4-mile run. Johnson, in fact, did not lose a race that entire season and proceeded to run his winning streak to 11 races as a senior. "

Congratulations, Wallace! The Bishop family is so proud of you and your accomplishments!! #ncwcAlumni #BishopFamily

There will never be another group that did so much ,for the kids and the school, like Bauer, Scalf ,and Edge!!!!class of 80!

Warren Stone but had so many great ones; Smith, Palmer, Grissom, etc. Never had Scalf but he did destroy me in badminton after I won my class tournament. He was 30+ years my senior in short shorts and made me look like the old man.

We were so small back in the late 1970's. I think there were only 400 students who lived on campus. These educators were like surrogate parents. I could go to Dr. Petteway and talk about financing my education or go to Coach Scalf with concerns I had about the direction the athletic department was going. All the coaches were excellent with the students, whether they were PE majors or something else. I was a nursing major. Class of '81.

Bauer, Scalf, Edge, & Allison

Bauer, Scalf, and Edge were the best.

Anyone know what happened to Coach Music?

Undergraduate foundation that led to many other avenues of embarkment!
