“Fake News, Misinformation, and Disinformation”
The term “fake news” gets bandied about regularly these days, but what does it even mean? Is there such a thing anymore as “real news”? How do these concepts relate to misinformation and disinformation, and how can we tell the difference?

In our current online/social media, 24/7 news cycle world, we are constantly bombarded with Information. As we know, much of this is questionable, unreliable, or just plain false. In this brief talk, I will discuss how and when fake news emerged as a force and what distinguishes it from other types of misinformation. I’ll also talk about the cognitive biases that make us all vulnerable to such spurious information and a few tips for dealing with fake news.

Rocky Mount will ROCK when renowned band and vocalists from the Canadian-based group Jeans ‘n Classics return to perform with the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus for an unforgettable evening of music from the iconic band Queen. Dr. Patricia Brewer will be giving her Jefferson-Pilot Lecture on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. in Powers Recital Hall of the Dunn Center.  There will be a reception immediately following the lecture in Mims Gallery.
