The term “fake news” gets bandied about regularly these days, but what does it even mean? Is there such a thing anymore as “real news”? How do these concepts relate to misinformation and disinformation, and how can we tell the difference?
In our current online/social media, 24/7 news cycle world, we are constantly bombarded with Information. As we know, much of this is questionable, unreliable, or just plain false. In this brief talk, I will discuss how and when fake news emerged as a force and what distinguishes it from other types of misinformation. I’ll also talk about the cognitive biases that make us all vulnerable to such spurious information and a few tips for dealing with fake news.
