How do I update a Will designating NCWU as a beneficiary?
If you are an Attorney or Executor of an Estate or Will, thank you for assisting your clients in making a gift to NC Wesleyan or helping to administer an estate gift. Below is sample information that can assist you in completing this process:
Sample Bequest Language
I bequeath to North Carolina Wesleyan University (Tax ID #56-0686603), a nonprofit organization located in Rocky Mount, NC,
- the sum of _________ dollars; or
- an amount equal to ________ percent of the net value of my estate; or
- all of the residue of my estate, both real and personal
If you would like to designate your bequest to a particular academic program, scholarship, athletic sport or more, you can use this additional language to designate it:
It is my request that this gift be used for the benefit of [specify designation] at North Carolina Wesleyan University as directed in my most recent statement of intent with the University.
Creative ways to pay for updating a Will.
Here are some simple options to offset the cost incurred by an attorney for updating a Will. The University could set up any of these options with a local attorney if desired and direct donors to use them to update their Will. Each of these can be discussed beforehand with our Advancement team. Please contact us with any questions regarding these options.
- The donor may choose to pay for the cost as part of their donation to the University.
- The attorney may provide a “gift in kind” to the University by not charging for the service to the client and the University would provide them with the tax benefit.
- The University could choose to pay the attorney directly for this change if the value of the change is significant.

Supporting a Fund or Named Endowment
You may designate your bequest to support any of NC Wesleyan’s existing endowments (e.g. an endowed scholarship, chair or award), or to establish a new or named endowment fund. In order to do so, please contact us before finalizing your will to discuss necessary wording and minimum giving levels to ensure that NC Wesleyan can fulfill your wishes.
Please encourage your clients to share that they have included a gift to NC Wesleyan University in their plans so we can ensure we can honor their intentions as well as thank them for their generosity.
